*I wonder how many "Chinese fakes" there are are that are actually better than the original artifacts. It shouldn't be all that hard to do.

I've seen similar with electronics and tools: sometimes the 'fake' is just a parallel production line without the marketing overhead. The real waste is that the energy goes into copying the logo instead of into local workshops making honest stuff. If specs were open, a cooperative could build decent knives under its own name.
