Wait a minute, you guys are academics who study the Internet, and yet somehow you all found each other and you all know each other, how is that even possible
*It's seems a little presumptuous for an Apple operating system to just unilaterally classify ChatGPT as malware and dump it straight into the trash
"What happens when we "fork" and the bro in the forkpod next-door is Sam Altman and I can't stand him
@bruces
Eh, fork Sam Altman
Maybe they got one thing accidentally right though. Everyone on Earth is living in the Arctic because thanks to the pursuit of this farcical techno-dystopia the rest of the planet is uninhabitable.
@bruces maybe you need to reissue Schizmatrix
@bruces Those digital upload people are unrealistically confident that their consciousnesses will be backed up and restored religiously and not left to rot like an old film reel.
@bruces the earth people hanging out on .. earth ..1 ? or did we decide to make twin earths ? either way i wanna sit outside in nature with a bottle of wine ..
@bruces I don't agree between choosing between valuing terrestrial life and space exploration.
Imhi, both are interlinked
As in, instead of mining and destroying our planet, we should find asteroids with the necessary materials and get those
If we worked towards doing stuff in space, instead of inside our planet, we could surely have both
P.S. Before the "is expensive" crowd comes in, that's because we currently don't calculate the ecological impact in the expenses.We throw that to the future
@bruces maybe the solution is to just sell those B ark people a blockchain enabled dongle with a Wifi antenna, an AI generated booklet on how to drill this in their skull and a cyanide fork acceleration pill.
@bruces I call bullshit. Fork 4 is actually Fork 1 and has been happening for a while now. It’s also the only one that actually matters.
@bruces this would be a great time to discover paratime technologies and watch humanity Spork
@bruces Why do so many AI-generated images illustrating space travel or "progress" feature an archaic Space Shuttle?
@bruces I guess it’s just another instance of “fork around, find out”.
On a more serious note, none of these suggested "forks" are actually biologically incompatible, so it seems more like a lifestyle choice, albeit at a larger scale. Since most of the choices fall straight in line with financial capabilities (you can’t have a nice simulation of you running if you’re broke), new options will only widen the social gap some more.
@bruces it’s also woefully and to be expected from AI unoriginal sci-fi.
@bruces
I have a better use case for forking. It may or may not involve a fork and Sam Altmann's face.
@bruces Having thought about it, I think I'd rather spoon.
Of course, this also raises the worrying possibility that humanity might spork, and I don't think anyone's ready for that.
@bruces Word!
@bruces motherforkers!
@bruces I believe the only acceptable response to this is "Fork off".
@bruces We are so forked
*He'll assert himself as The Antichrist again as soon as the MAGA crowd calms down a little
*Also he'll be projecting that somebody else must be the Antichrist, for instance, the American Pope
*This seems interesting -- all the house-technology in one solid pointy lump, and then you attach some favela tenting to it, maybe some sleeping bags

@bruces needs septic system
@bruces
Looks like a Pylon from the old 70s Land of the Lost kids show. Does it time travel?
@bruces there's something distinctive about architects' design fiction - the wildly impractical shape is essential to the whole scheme, like intentional spelling mistakes in 419 spam
@bruces
East European "panelaky" apartment blocks used to have something similar — a prefab / quick assemble core that has bathroom and toilet on the inside and kitchen bench on the outside (stove and sink)
@bruces Wow is this the European (hence space constrained) version of seasteading? https://klumpen.eu/
